How to appear in Google AI Overviews

Key takeaways

  • AI Overviews are the AI answers at the top of Google. Being cited as a source puts you above the normal blue links.
  • The one tactic that matters most: write self-contained answers of 40–90 words directly under a heading phrased as the question.
  • 74% of citations come from the top 10 results, so classic SEO still counts. But 47% come from below position 5, so you don't need #1.
  • Google leans on topical authority, real expertise (E-E-A-T), completeness, clean formatting and crawlability.
  • Few Nepali businesses optimize for this yet, so the window is open right now.

To appear in Google AI Overviews, write clear, self-contained answers of roughly 40 to 90 words directly beneath headings phrased the way people actually ask the question, back them with genuine expertise, and keep the page fast, crawlable and marked up with schema. Google's AI reads across the web, picks the passages it can quote with confidence, and credits the sources. Your job is to be the easiest, most trustworthy passage to quote.

This is a more tactical follow-up to my broader guide on AI search optimization in Nepal. That one covers the whole GEO and AEO picture across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google. This one zooms in on the single surface most Nepali searchers see first: the AI Overview box at the top of Google.

What AI Overviews are

An AI Overview is the block of AI-written text Google now places above the normal results for many searches. Behind it sits Gemini, Google's language model, reading several pages, stitching together an answer, and linking the sources it drew from. For the person searching, it's an instant answer. For a business, it's a new front row: get cited and your name sits at the very top, often before anyone scrolls to the blue links.

The catch is that AI Overviews also absorb clicks. When Google answers the question outright, fewer people click through. That makes being the cited source more valuable, not less, because the citation is often the only visibility left on the page. If your competitor is quoted and you aren't, they own that moment.

Why they matter for Nepali businesses

AI Overviews already appear for plenty of the informational searches Nepali users run, especially "how," "what" and "best" questions. Someone researching "how to register a company in Nepal" or "best time to visit Pokhara" may read an AI answer before any website. If your content is the source, you earn trust and recognition even from a zero-click search.

Here's the part worth acting on. Almost no Nepali business writes with AI Overviews in mind yet. The same gap that exists in ordinary SEO here is even wider in AI search. Publish clear, genuinely helpful answers now and you can become the cited voice in your niche well before the competition notices the shift.

Write extractable answers

This is the heart of it. Google's AI prefers short, complete passages it can lift and trust, and the research is consistent: most cited answers run between 100 and 300 words, with the tightest quotable units landing around 40 to 90 words. If your answer is buried three paragraphs into a rambling section, the model can't cleanly extract it.

The method is simple to apply:

  • Phrase a heading as the real question. Use the words people type, like "How much does a passport cost in Nepal?" rather than a vague "Pricing."
  • Answer it in the first line. Give the direct answer immediately, in one or two sentences, before you add detail.
  • Keep the core answer self-contained. It should make sense on its own, lifted out of the page, with no "as mentioned above."
  • Then expand. Follow the short answer with the depth, examples and context that prove you know the topic.

Do this for every question your customers ask and you turn a normal page into a series of quotable units. It's the same answer-first habit that also wins featured snippets, so the work pays off twice.

The five things Google rewards

Beyond formatting, five signals separate content that gets cited from content that gets ignored:

  • Topical authority. Cover your subject in depth across several linked pages, not one thin article. Depth across a topic tells Google you're a real source.
  • Experience and expertise (E-E-A-T). First-hand knowledge, a named author, and evidence you actually do the work. This is where a real person behind the site beats a faceless brand.
  • Completeness. Answer the question fully, including the follow-ups. A page that resolves the whole query gets quoted more than one that answers half of it.
  • Clean formatting. Clear headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables. The easier your page is to parse, the easier it is to quote.
  • Crawlability. If Google can't crawl and render the page quickly, none of the above matters.

None of this is exotic. It's good SEO and honest content, sharpened for a reader that happens to be a machine. A well-built content strategy already points in this direction.

Schema and technical basics

Structured data helps Google understand what your page is and trust what it says. Add Article schema to your posts and FAQ schema to your question-and-answer sections. Every post on this site does exactly that, and it's a small, one-time job with a lasting payoff.

Speed and mobile matter too. AI Overviews draw heavily from pages that are fast and technically clean, and Google folds Core Web Vitals into the picture. If your site is slow, fix that first. A page nobody can load quickly won't be quoted, no matter how good the answer is. My work on answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization is built around exactly these fundamentals.

Two truths that change your strategy

Two findings should shape how you spend your effort. First, about three-quarters of AI Overview citations come from pages already ranking in the top 10, so you can't ignore classic SEO. Getting onto page one is still the price of entry.

Second, and more encouraging, nearly half of citations come from pages ranking below position five. Google's AI often reaches past the top result to grab the clearest, most complete answer wherever it finds it. That means a smaller Nepali site with a genuinely better answer can get cited above a bigger competitor that ranks higher but explains things poorly. Rank well enough to be seen, then win on the quality and clarity of the answer itself.

Want your business quoted in AI search, not skipped? I help Nepali businesses structure content so Google's AI, ChatGPT and Perplexity actually cite them. If that's where you want to be before your competitors get there, get in touch and let's plan it.
