Key takeaways
- Cake buyers decide with their eyes and in a hurry. A verified Google Business Profile full of real cake photos, with prices and an easy way to order, wins more orders than anything else.
- Give each kind of cake its own page, such as birthday, photo, eggless and custom cakes, with price per pound, flavours, order notice and delivery areas.
- Make ordering one tap away: call, WhatsApp or Viber, and a simple order form. Keep your details identical on Facebook, Instagram and delivery apps.
- If you also teach baking, as many Nepali bakeries do, give your courses separate pages. Students search differently from cake buyers.
To get a bakery or cake shop in Nepal found on Google, verify your Google Business Profile with the right categories and plenty of real photos, create a page for each main cake type with prices and order details, make ordering by phone or WhatsApp effortless, and collect reviews after every order. Keep the same name, address and phone on Facebook, Instagram and delivery apps so customers and Google see one consistent business.
Many Nepali bakeries take most orders through Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, and that works. But when someone searches "cake shop near me" or "birthday cake delivery in Kathmandu" an hour before a party, Google decides which bakeries they see. This guide covers how to be one of them.
How people find a bakery
Bakery searches fall into a few clear groups. Each one needs something different from your profile and website:
| Search type | Examples | What wins it |
|---|---|---|
| Nearby, right now | bakery near me, cake shop near me | Business Profile: distance, open hours, photos, reviews |
| Occasion | birthday cake Kathmandu, anniversary cake delivery | Cake pages with prices, photos and delivery areas |
| Specific product | eggless cake, photo cake, fondant cake, sugar-free cake | A page for that product with sizes and order notice |
| Town name | bakery in Besishahar, cake shop in Butwal | Your town in your profile, page titles and text |
| Classes | baking class Kathmandu, bakery training | Separate course pages (see below) |
These are examples of how people phrase searches, not measured search volumes. Once your pages are live, Search Console shows the exact searches that bring visitors. The Search Console guide explains where to look.
Outside Kathmandu, the competition is often thin. A bakery in a district headquarters with a complete profile and a simple website can be the clear choice for "bakery in [town]" searches.
Google Business Profile for bakeries
Start with your Google Business Profile. Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, so a complete, active profile matters more than anything on your website.
- Categories: Google's guidelines say to "choose the fewest number of categories it takes to describe your overall core business." Most bakeries need Bakery or Cake shop as the main category, plus one or two that are genuinely true, such as Pastry shop or Dessert shop.
- Name: use your real signboard name. Adding words like "Best Cake Shop Kathmandu" breaks Google's rules and can get the profile suspended.
- Products or menu: add your main cakes and baked goods with photos and prices, for example "Black forest, 1 pound, from NPR …". Keep prices current.
- Hours: include early opening if you sell breakfast bread, and update hours before festivals and public holidays.
- Delivery: if you have a shop and also deliver, you can show your address and set a service area for delivery.
- Order link: link to your order page or WhatsApp so people can order straight from Google.
Cake pages that take orders
One gallery page with every cake you have ever made doesn't tell Google or customers what you sell. Create a page for each main type of cake, and on each page answer the questions people ask in your inbox:
- Price per pound (or per piece for pastries and cupcakes), and what costs extra, such as photo prints, fondant work or toppers.
- Sizes and flavours available.
- Order notice: same day, 24 hours or three days for custom designs.
- Delivery areas and charges, and whether customers can collect from the shop.
- Eggless, sugar-free or allergy notes, stated plainly and only if true.
- An order button: call, WhatsApp, Viber or a short form.
| Page | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Birthday cakes | The most common occasion; can match searches all year |
| Photo and theme cakes | Customers search for these by name and compare designs |
| Eggless cakes | A specific need; customers look for a bakery that clearly offers it |
| Wedding, anniversary and engagement cakes | Higher-value orders planned weeks ahead |
| Pastries, cupcakes and bread | Everyday sales and office orders |
| Delivery areas | One page listing the areas you deliver to, with charges and timing |
Don't create a separate page for every neighbourhood with the same text and a different place name. That's thin, repetitive content. One delivery page that lists your areas is more useful.
Photos: your best salesperson
For cakes, photos sell more than words. Upload new photos of real cakes to your Business Profile every week; it's the easiest way to keep your profile active. On your website:
- Use your own photos, never other bakeries' work or stock images.
- Compress them (WebP at 1200 pixels wide is plenty) so pages load fast on mobile data.
- Name files and write alt text that describe the cake, for example
two-tier-chocolate-birthday-cake.webpand "Two-tier chocolate birthday cake with gold drip". - Show the price and size near each photo so customers don't have to message to ask.
The image SEO guide covers file names, alt text and compression in more detail.
Ordering, delivery and listings
Bakery orders are urgent and personal, so make contact effortless. Put tap-to-call and WhatsApp buttons at the top of every page on mobile, and tell customers what details to send: cake type, size, message on the cake, date, time and delivery address. Track those clicks so you know which pages bring orders; the guide to tracking WhatsApp leads in GA4 shows how.
If you sell through delivery apps such as Foodmandu or Pathao, keep your shop name, photos and hours the same there as on Google and Facebook. The same applies to directory listings; the checked list of Nepal business listing sites shows which are still worth using. Restaurants face many of the same issues, so the restaurant SEO guide is worth a read too.
Reviews and occasions
Ask every customer for a Google review after they collect or receive their cake, while the party photos are fresh. A QR code on the cake box or a WhatsApp message the next day works well. Reply to every review, and handle complaints about taste or late delivery politely and specifically.
Don't offer discounts for reviews or write them yourself; Google's policies don't allow it. The Google review request guide has ready-to-send templates.
Plan around the dates that matter to your customers. Update your profile, post photos and publish or refresh pages three to four weeks before, for example:
- Christmas and English New Year
- Valentine's Day
- School and office events in your area
- Your own busiest dates from last year's orders
If you also run baking classes
Many Nepali bakeries also teach. Course searches such as "bakery training in Pokhara" or "cake baking class" come from people planning a career or business, not buying a cake today. Give each course its own page with:
- Duration, schedule and fee.
- What students learn and make.
- Who the instructor is, with real experience.
- Any certificate, named accurately. Don't imply official accreditation you don't have.
- Photos of real classes, with students' permission.
Keep course pages separate from your cake pages so each can rank for its own searches.
Schema markup for bakeries
Add LocalBusiness schema using the most specific type, Bakery, so search engines can read your name, address, phone and hours reliably. A minimal example:
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Bakery",
"name": "Example Bakery",
"url": "https://example.com.np/",
"telephone": "+977-98XXXXXXXX",
"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"streetAddress": "Main Road",
"addressLocality": "Besishahar",
"addressRegion": "Lamjung",
"addressCountry": "NP"
},
"openingHours": "Mo-Su 07:00-20:00"
}
Every value must match what's on your page and Business Profile. The schema markup guide explains how to test it.
Examples from my work
I designed and built the website for Pariwar Bakery, a bakery and training centre in Besishahar, Lamjung. The brief was a site that looked appetising, loaded fast on phones and was built for search from the start. That meant a custom mobile-first build, optimised images, semantic HTML with a clean heading structure, LocalBusiness schema and on-page SEO. I also built a modern, responsive website for Supreme Bakes & Cakes, a cake business.
The lesson from both: a bakery site doesn't need to be big. It needs to be fast on mobile, show real products clearly and make ordering obvious. I'm not publishing traffic or order figures for these clients. The Pariwar Bakery case study describes the project scope.
A 30-day plan
- Week 1: verify your Business Profile, fix the name, categories and hours, and upload 20 real photos.
- Week 2: add your main products with prices to the profile, and build pages for birthday cakes and your best-selling special cake.
- Week 3: add call and WhatsApp buttons, an order form, a delivery areas page and Bakery schema.
- Week 4: start asking every customer for a review, match your details on Facebook, Instagram and delivery apps, and post new photos weekly.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a website if I already sell on Facebook and Instagram?
Social media is good for showing new cakes, but a website and Google Business Profile help you appear when people search Google. A small, fast website with your main cake types, prices and an order button is enough to start.
Should I show cake prices online?
Yes, at least starting prices per pound. Customers compare bakeries quickly, and a clear price saves both of you time. Explain what changes the price, such as design, fondant or photo prints.
Can my bakery rank for cake delivery across the whole city?
Map results favour businesses close to the searcher, so you will rank best near your shop. A clear delivery page, a service area on your Business Profile and good reviews help you reach further, but no bakery shows first everywhere.
How many photos should a bakery add to Google?
There's no fixed number. Start with 20 or more real photos of your cakes, shop and team, then add new ones every week. Fresh photos keep your profile active and show customers what you make now.
